Muay Thai is a national sport of Thailand. Also known as Thai boxing, it allows you to hit your opponent with the “eight limbs”: arms, legs, knees and elbows!!

The rules of Muay Thai  is not too complicated. You are allowed to strike with legs, arms (with their mandatory gloves), elbows and knees while you are forbidden to strike with the head or make hits from the ground. The fighting comprises of five rounds of three minutes. A referee in the ring separates the fighters in case of any irregularity or can get to stop the fight if one fighter is not at all a match to the opponent.

Brief History of Muay Thai

Today, Muay Thai has become a national symbol of the history and identity of Thailand, but it originated from Muay Boran, the “Ancient Boxing” practiced in Southeast Asian countries 2,000 years ago. Buddhism is the official religion of Thailand and its influence can be seen in Muay Thai. Before each battle, the fighters come to a curious ritual with a mixture of dance, prayers and various superstitions.

The sport continued to modernize gradually and in the last 100 years there have been changes in the rules and customs.

The present

Muay Thai is considered an extreme sport and in some countries it is illegal. But, it is one of the most sought-after sports with a continuously increasing number of practitioners. The best training camps are in Thailand, but there are good trainers in many parts of the world including Indian cities like Bangalore. Internationally there is a World Muay Thai Federation (WMF) which ensures its proper promotion.

More and more foreigners are learning Muay Thai and even become professionals.

Those who had witnessed real Muay Thai contests in Bangkok will say that is not as violent and dangerous as I’ve heard in the past. Yes, it’s a contact sport but also has its spiritual part and an ethic that all practitioners scrupulously observe.
